Kaiju No. 8 (怪獣8号 Kaijū Hachigō) is a 2024 animated kaiju series funded by the JAKDF 3rd Division and animated by Production I.G. It is an adaptation of the Shonen Jump+ manga of the same name by Naoya Matsumoto.

Development
Studios Production I.G. and Khara, inc. announced that they will animate the series and create the kaiju designs respectively on December 15, 2022.[9] It was announced on August 5, 2023 that Masaya Fukunishi was cast as Kafka Hibino/Kaiju No. 8,[10] Wataru Kato as Reno Ichikawa,[11] and Asami Seto as Mina Ashiro.[12] Fairouz Ai and Kengo Kawanishi were announced to voice Kikoru Shinomiya and Soshiro Hoshina respectively in the series on December 16.[13] On December 22, Yuki Shin was announced to be the voice of Iharu Furuhashi,[14] Keisuke Komoto the voice of Haruichi Izumo,[14] and Shunsuke Takeuchi as the voice of Aoi Kaguragi.[14] On February 29, 2024, Sayaka Senbongi was announced to be cast as Konomi Okonogi.[15]
Marketing
A teaser for the anime was uploaded to TOHO animation's YouTube channel on August 4, 2022,[16] with an official trailer following on December 15.[9] From March 19 to 24, 2023, the character designs for Kaiju No. 8,[17] Kafka Hibino,[18] Mina Ashiro,[19] Reno Ichikawa,[20] Kikoru Shinomiya,[21] and Soshiro Hoshina[22] were revealed. The second teaser trailer for the series was released on August 5, along with two new character visuals three days later, of that same year.[23] On December 16, the main trailer for the series was released online, along with new character design visuals for Kikoru Shinomiya and Soshiro Hoshina.[13] Character designs for Iharu Furuhashi, Haruichi Izumo, and Aoi Kaguragi were unveiled on December 22.[14] On February 29, 2024, the second main trailer for Kaiju No. 8 was released alongside the design for Konomi Okonogi.[24][15]

Kafka Hibino (日比野 カフカ Hibino Kafuka), dubbed Kaiju No. 8 (怪獣8号 Kaijū Hachigō) by the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, is the main protagonist of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8.
A staff member of Kaiju cleanup company Monster Sweeper Inc., he desired to join the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force after his dream of fighting by Mina Ashiro's side was reawakened. However, a small winged Kaiju flew into Kafka's mouth and merged itself with him after he declared his desire to join the Defense Force. Now having transformed into a Kaiju, Kafka seeks to accomplish his goal while maintaining his transformation a secret from the Defense Force.
Name
In Kaiju No. 8, Kafka's Kaiju form is labeled Kaiju No. 8 (怪獣8号 Kaijū Hachigō) by the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force following his first appearance in Yokohama.
Personality
Kafka is shown to be supportive and kind-hearted. He frequently gives words of encouragement to his friends such as Reno Ichikawa and Kikoru Shinomiya, and is overall friendly toward others. However, he tends to get into childish squabbles whenever he is made fun of or put in an undesirable situation. Being a member of Monster Sweeper Inc., he has detailed knowledge of Kaiju anatomy and how their organs function.
Design
As Kaiju No. 8, Kafka has a monstrous appearance. His face is that of a horned skull with sharp teeth that extend to the sides of his head. He has four prominent fangs and cracks around his eye sockets, which house two small, glowing, cyan eyes. His body is dark gray in color and muscular with glowing cyan streaks on his torso, arms, and feet. His legs are armored and segmented. He has a row of curved, pointed spines running down the back of his neck and back.
When charging his attacks, Kafka's streaks extend to his neck, chest, and legs, and his glow becomes more prominent, with his eye sockets turning completely cyan.[26]
Origins
Following a Yoju's attack in Yokohama, Kafka was hospitalized alongside Reno Ichikawa. Hearing Ichikawa praise him for his selfless acts and his encouragement to join the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, Kafka's dream of fighting by Mina Ashiro's side was reignited. However, just as he was about to confidently declare his desire to join the Defense Force, Kafka noticed a small Kaiju hovering above him. The Kaiju said, "Found you," before flying into his mouth and forcing its way through his body. After ingesting the creature, Kafka's appearance radically changed to that of a monster and he gained immense power, transforming into the Kaiju that would later be known as Kaiju No. 8.

"The Man Who Became a Kaiju"
After a Kaiju ravaged through and destroyed a city, a young Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro watched the aftermath. They both made a promise to each other: that they would join the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force and fight by each other's side when they grew up.
In the present day, Kafka, now thirty-two years old, and a member of Kaiju cleanup company Monster Sweeper, Inc., viewed the deceased reptilian Kaiju Philinosoma that was killed by now-Defense Force captain Mina Ashiro, with the monster's organs scattered all over the city. He proclaimed that he and his colleagues would need to be working overtime for a while before heading off to the scene with them. As several civilians and news reporters celebrated the reptilian Kaiju's defeat, Kafka noticed Mina walking with other Defense Force members but continued on his way. During the cleanup process, Kafka cut into the Kaiju's carcass and requested a heated chainsaw to further penetrate the thick layer of grease on the Kaiju's skin. He then noticed one of the Kaiju's organs being hoisted up and warned the others not to lift it. Despite his warnings, the organ ruptured, staining and burning one of the other members. Kafka treated his wound before being sent to clean up the monster's intestines, much to his dismay. He attempted to flee but was dragged away by the site manager. At the intestine area, Kafka cut into the organs with a buzzsaw, causing excrement to fly as he whined.
After his shift, Kafka went home and laid on his bed, exhausted. He turned his attention to a news broadcast on the TV, where Mina was showcased and praised for her role in the Kaiju's defeat. Kafka remembered the promise he made to Mina and began to sulk, but quickly dismissed his train of thought.
The next day, Kafka arrived at the Monster Sweeper HQ and was greeted by his coworker Masahide Tokuda. Tokuda introduced him to Reno Ichikawa, telling the latter of Kafka's former dreams of joining the Defense Force, embarrassing him. Suddenly, Ichikawa asked him why he gave up on his dreams. Kafka replied that he had tried hard to join, but always fell short, feeling his abilities were limited. Kafka told Ichikawa that once he is older, he will understand. However, Ichikawa refuted this, instead coldly telling his senior that he would never understand him and that he wished not to, angering and flustering Kafka. Ichikawa was later deployed to the intestines area. Kafka cheerfully exclaimed but was notified that he was being sent there as well. Kafka screamed and complained to the manager, but ran off to clean the organs anyway. The manager noted that, despite his complaints, Kafka is a diligent worker and that he would have been a good officer had he passed the Defense Force application exam.
During the team's break, Kafka noticed Ichikawa visibly repulsed by his earlier task, smiling, before nearly vomiting himself. After he recuperated, he noticed a bento box that Ichikawa brought to work and asked him about it. Ichikawa replied that he no longer has much appetite. Kafka then tossed him a Vitamin V jelly pouch, explaining that if he did not eat, he would not make it through the day. Ichikawa attempted to refuse but was met with an insistent Kafka now offering him noseplugs as well due to the stench of the Kaiju's remains. Ichikawa refused again, but Kafka tried forcefully stuffing them in his nose. Ichikawa attempted to flee and was now being chased around by Kafka as the two squabbled. Hours later, the other Monster Sweeper members left for the day. They departed with Kafka before he was approached by Ichikawa. Ichikawa thanked him for helping him get through the day, bowing. He also mentioned that the Defense Force had pushed back its age capacity to thirty-three years of age, giving Kafka a chance to pursue his dream once more.
Suddenly, a spider-like Yoju Trichonephila emerged from the ground. Before the Yoju could bite Ichikawa, Kafka tackled him out of the way. The Yoju attempted to grab Ichikawa, but he was kicked away by Kafka. Kafka yelled at Ichikawa to run and alert the Defense Force. Ichikawa initially protested, but hesitantly ran away, much to Kafka's relief. Kafka grabbed a nearby pipe and slammed it against the ground, getting the Yoju's attention. He ran and the Yoju began to give chase, repeatedly attempting to subdue Kafka. He then spotted an alleyway and slid through it, briefly stalling the monster. He ran towards the alley's exit, shattering the glass screen in front of it.
After jumping out of the alleyway, he had another flashback to the moment when he made a promise with Mina. Kafka, now injured, remarked how, "it shouldn't be like this." The Yoju burst through a nearby wall and began to give chase again. Kafka stopped and prepared to defend himself, but he was knocked away by the large creature. The Yoju then stomped on his leg, breaking it and causing Kafka to yell in pain. Seeing that was unable to escape, he looked on at the Yoju hopelessly as it attempted to eat him.
Suddenly, Ichikawa returned, smashing a stop sign against the large creature. Kafka looked at him in surprise and asked him why he returned. Ichikawa replied that he already called the Defense Force and that if he were to abandon his senior, he himself would never become a Defense Force officer. Kafka, shocked, remembered the rejection letter he received from the Defense Force. As the Yoju attacked Ichikawa, Kafka began feeling useless. He thought about all the things he was not able to save throughout his entire life, and, frustrated, yelled out, "DAMN IT!" Mina Ashiro's tiger, Bakko, suddenly appeared and charged at the creature, shoving its arm away from the two. The Yoju roared in pain as it was shot dead, then collapsed. Mina arrived at the scene and gave orders to assist the two Monster Sweeper members, as well as search for any remaining Yoju.
Later, Kafka laid in bed at Yokohama South General Hospital. He admired how Mina quickly dispatched the Yoju before Ichikawa called out to him. He praised Kafka for his bravery and advised him to reconsider achieving his dream of joining the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. Kafka thanked Ichikawa and agreed, now feeling more motivated than ever to join. His enthusiasm was suddenly cut short by a small flying Kaiju hovering above him. The creature said, "Found you," before flying into his mouth and through his body. After Kafka ingested the monster, he began violently convulsing as his vision grew distorted. Noticing his senior's visible pain, Ichikawa pulled back the curtain to reveal a shocking sight: in place of Kafka, sat a monstrous, skull-faced, and glowing creature. Kafka, now in Kaiju form, was initially puzzled by Ichikawa's speechlessness, but then turned to the window, looking at his reflection. Kafka and Ichikawa then screamed out in confusion and panic. Seeing Ichikawa visibly frightened, Kafka attempted to calm him down, before a shaken elderly man stumbled across the bizarre sight. The man reported Kafka to the Defense Force, causing the two to panic.
Ashiro reminisces about a memory she had with Kafka, in which she expressed fear of having to fight a Kaiju several times larger than herself. Kafka then reassured her, telling her that as long as they were by each other's side, they had nothing to be afraid of.
"The Kaiju Who Defeats Other Kaiju"
In the past, a young Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro banter, with the latter eventually thanking Kafka for his reassurance.
In the present, a newly transformed Kafka, now a Kaiju, stood with Reno Ichikawa before a horrified elderly man. They attempted to calm him down by having Kafka smile at the man. Seeing Kafka's horrific smile, the elderly man fainted. Kafka crouched down and attempted to check on the man, placing his hand on a wall, immediately destroying it due to his newly-found strength. The wall's destruction attracted the attention of the other hospital patients. The two then decided to flee the hospital before Kafka tore open the room's window. Kafka and Ichikawa then jumped out of the hospital.
While they fled, Ichikawa turned back to look at Kafka to confirm if he really was a Kaiju. After turning to look at his senior, he was met with a twisted and malformed Kafka with a red tendril protruding out of his neck and several tentacles in place of his legs. The shocked Ichikawa asked if this was a new form, to which Kafka expressed uncertainty. Suddenly, a fanged worm-like tongue sprouted from the Kaiju's mouth and launched itself at a nearby bird. It caught the bird and began to grotesquely eat it, much to Kafka's shock. Kafka then reverted back to his regular Kaiju form as he continued to run. Kafka suddenly told Ichikawa of incoming trouble. When asked what it was, Kafka replied that he needed to urinate. Despite his embarrassment, Kafka urinated from his nipples, shocking both him and Ichikawa. Kafka stopped and began rolling on the ground, hysterically throwing a fit. Ichikawa dismissed Kafka's concerns and attempted to pull him up from the ground. Kafka then asked Ichikawa if he still had a chance at joining the Defense Force, which Ichikawa profusely negated. Kafka then realized that, despite being inspired to join the Defense Force again, he would no longer be able to due to becoming a Kaiju. Ichikawa spotted a cordon gate, stating that once they climbed over to the other side, no one would look for them. Kafka then felt the presence of a nearby Kaiju: a Trichonephila, the same type of Kaiju that had attacked the two earlier. In the wake of the Yoju's emergence, Ichikawa convinced Kafka to hide.
The Trichonephila roamed the area and came across a young girl and her mother, who was buried under their house's rubble. The Yoju smashed through the house wall and attempted to eat the two. Kafka suddenly dashed forward and punched the monster in the face, sending it flying. He turned to the young girl and asked if she was okay, frightening her due to his appearance. Kafka apologized and attempted to smile again, only causing her to cry. Kafka attempted to calm her down before Ichikawa arrived. The Kaiju then freed the mother from the rubble and Ichikawa carried her on his back. The Trichonephila returned and Kafka ordered Ichikawa to get them to safety. Ichikawa asked what he was going to do, to which Kafka replied that he was going to punch the monster as hard as he could. He then began charging an attack and started counting down, electrical energy coursing through his body. The Yoju attempted to bite the Kaiju, but he dodged out of the way. After counting down, Kafka launched his fist, delivering an extremely powerful punch, launching the Trichonephila into the air. The Yoju's body convulsed before exploding, its organs and body parts splattering all over the area. A rain of the monster's blood soon fell upon the now-victorious Kafka. He turned to the girl and, seeing her still frightened, assured her that he was going to leave. As Kafka began to leave, the girl called out to and thanked him. He then reminisced on a young Ashiro saying that as long as she and Kafka were together, there was nothing to be afraid of before the two ran through a field. In the present, Kafka, feeling inspired again, imagined a scenario in the future where he faced a Kaiju along with Ashiro. His Kaiju form's head flaked away as he proclaimed that he would not give up and that he still had to stand by his childhood friend's side.
Three months later, a news report on the newly-dubbed Kaiju No. 8 was shown on the Monster Sweeper TV screen. Ichikawa received acceptance letters from the Defense Force for him and Kafka. He takes Kafka's letter over him and explains that their applications to the Defense Force had been accepted. Kafka turned around, revealing that his head was transformed into that of his Kaiju's form. Ichikawa then kicked Kafka and proceeded to scold him over his carelessness in keeping his new form secret. The Kaiju wiped his face, reverting back to normal save for his sharp teeth. Ichikawa scolded his senior again. Ichikawa then remembered the night in which he and Kafka returned to the hospital, pretending to have escaped their "encounter" with Kaiju No. 8. In the present, Ichikawa handed Kafka his acceptance letter, to which he seemed only mildly pleased. When questioned about his reaction, Kafka mentioned that he always passed the application, but failed the second part. Ichikawa asked Kafka if he was still going to partake in the exam, despite his transformed body. Kafka confirmed that he would, stating that, despite the risk of officers catching him, he would still take the chance. He also mentioned that he had been working hard the past three months and that this was his final chance at accomplishing his goal. Ichikawa warned that if they were to proceed, they would do so as rivals, much to Kafka's amusement. Kafka grabbed his water bottle and attempted to twist it open, shifting back into his Kaiju form and crushing it. In response, Ichikawa harshly exclaimed that Kakfa should just skip the exam, causing his senior to whine. After Ichikawa left, Kafka expressed relief at having been accepted.
Ten days later, Kafka and Ichikawa arrived at the Defense Force's Tachikawa Base, where the exam was being held. Kafka mentioned that the area is shared with a Defense Force garrison. Ichikawa noted that the number of officers would be enough to dispatch his senior. Kafka continued to converse with Ichikawa before he was interrupted by a girl with blonde hair who called him old. He initially expressed confusion before loudly exclaiming that he was only thirty-two years old. The girl still called him old, which Ichikawa agreed with. After being told to move the Monster Sweeper car that they arrived in, Kafka angrily pointed out the several empty parking spots. The girl explained that the parking spot their vehicle was on had the number 5 on it, which she stated was her "lucky number" for the day. Frustrated, Kafka questioned what her problem was. After seeing that Kafka and Ichikawa would not budge, the girl opted to move the car herself. She revealed a combat suit she had been wearing and lifted the car with a single hand, shocking the two. The girl proceeded to toss the car aside, causing Kafka to panic. She introduced herself as Kikoru Shinomiya, stating that her hobby is killing Kaiju. Kikoru then sniffed in Kafka's direction, telling him that he smelled of Kaiju.
"Revenge Match"
After Kikoru Shinomiya told Kafka Hibino that he smelled of Kaiju, Reno Ichikawa interrupted the conversation, attempting to cover up his senior's transformation by stating that they both work in Kaiju disposal. Kikoru turned to Ichikawa and questioned why two Kaiju disposal workers were there at the exam. Her train of thought was soon interrupted and the two turned to see Kafka lifting the Monster Sweeper car, then placing it back down on a parking space, shocking Kikoru and causing her to wonder if he had a personal combat suit as well. Kafka boldly introduced himself to Kikoru and told her to remember his name. During his monologue, Kikoru's butler, Sebasu, parked in the former's desired parking space, angering Kafka. Kikoru then told Kafka that she expected the exam to be a formality, but then expressed interest in it being "fun", much to Kafka's confusion. She then stated that she was going to "show [him] up bad" before walking away with her butler and bodyguards. Soon after, Ichikawa stomped his foot and furiously glared at Kafka for being so careless in using his Kaiju powers. Kafka, startled, explained that he only transformed the parts of his body that weren't visible, which only caused Ichikawa to scold him more, attracting the attention of Defense Force garrison guards. The guards asked the two if they were okay, to which they responded that everything was fine. Kafka sighed in relief after the guards walked away. Ichikawa, irritated, told Kafka that the next time he used his powers out in the open, he would send him home, to which Kafka sheepishly agreed. Kafka then thought to himself that he had given up on his dreams once, but that this was his last chance to stand by Mina Ashiro's side. Determined, Kafka thought that he would not be giving up this time as he entered the Tachikawa Base alongside Ichikawa.
During the fitness part of the exam, Kafka struggled to keep up with the others during a crawling and running exercise despite months of training. Kafka reminisces on when he and Ichikawa went over the different parts of the exam: the fitness test and the aptitude test. They both agreed that, since they may or may not excel at the aptitude test, they should get the best grades they can on the fitness test. Earlier, Kafka struggled to do pull-ups, tight-rope walking, and wall climbing, remarking how he used to just be below-average but that now his body has gotten weaker. Kafka then struggled to keep up with the others during the running exercise, coming in last. He then wondered if he'd be able to beat the other examines by using his Kaiju abilities before his body began to give up.
Kafka, exhausted, looked down at his 219 out of 225 placement note in shame. Kikoru suddenly appeared and dropped her placement note on Kafka's, showing a placement of 5 out of 225. Kafka looked up at her only to be met with mockery, with Kikoru stating that it did not take long to show him up. Kafka then remembered his introduction to Kikoru and began screaming in embarrassment, begging her to forget his name before she walked away. Ichikawa walked up to Kafka and expressed relief in him not using his powers. After calming down, he briefly acknowledged that everyone worked hard to get to where they were and that it would be unfair of him to transform. Soon after, however, Kafka panicked and violently shook Ichikawa, yelling that he should've used his powers and that it had been so long since he tried for the exam. Ichikawa then replied that that wasn't the only reason his rank was so low, catching Kafka's attention.
Ichikawa began describing the other candidates to Kafka. He first described Haruichi Izumo, the top-class graduate from Tokyo Neutralizing University, explaining that he was the most promising of the new graduates. He then pointed out Iharu Furhashi, who was described as a powerhouse valedictorian at Hachioji Neutralization Technical College. Afterward, he mentioned Aoi Kaguragi, a rising Japan Ground Self-Defense Force candidate, stating that Kaguragi turned down a secured spot on the force to instead join the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. He told his senior that most of the other examinees would be trying to become elite officers, which Kafka figured was the reason they were excelling. Ichikawa then looked over at Kikoru, telling Kafka that she graduated from California Neutralization at only sixteen years old, making her the youngest graduate and earning her the reputation of one of the greatest talents ever. After hearing about her reputation, Kafka confronted Kikoru and yelled that he had no idea she was so amazing. In response, one of her bodyguards punched Kafka and began to stomp repeatedly on his chest along with another. The other examinees wondered if Kafka was a groupie of Kikoru's.
Moments later, Kafka was left bruised and injured after the assault by the bodyguards. Kikoru then proceeded to mock Kafka, enraging him and making him declare that he intended to humiliate Kikoru as well, only amusing the latter. After calming down, Kafka admitted to himself that he was "screwed." Ichikawa then stated that there may be hope for Kafka, as the second test revolved around Kaiju disposal, motivating Kafka.
After arriving in Defense Force Training Area Two, Kafka looked up at the large gate in surprise. Soshiro Hosina then introduced himself to the examinees and opened the gate, explaining that the second part of the exam involved exterminating the Primigenius Kaiju inside, shocking Kafka. Kafka, terrified, stumbled back and fell as the Honju leaped at Hoshina, but was blocked off by another automatic metal gate. Kikoru then turned around to see the frightened Kafka on the ground, then began to laugh at him, embarrassing the latter. Kafka yelled at Ichikawa for apparently misinforming him. Ichikawa clarified that he, too, was disappointed with the change. Hoshina mentioned that the examinees would be given combat suits during the trial.
Kafka admired the combat suit in front of him before putting it on. However, Konomi Okonogi soon read Kafka's Unleashed Combat power: zero percent, shocking the others and causing Hoshina to burst out laughing. Embarrassed, Kafka attempted to squeeze out more of his strength but failed. He wondered why he had such a low Combat Power, figuring that there must be a trick, and determined to find it.
Once the second part commenced, Kafka told Ichikawa not to fall behind, only for him to struggle carrying his own rifle. Hoshina suddenly stated that Ashiro was present during the exam, surprising Kafka. Remembering his promise, he felt motivated to use the best of his abilities. He questioned why the officers were following the examinees with drones. Ichikawa agreed due to them being able to read every participant's vitals. Kafka figured out that the officers wanted to test the examinees' capabilities as well as their adaptability. Since they lacked offensive advantages, the two decided to support the other examinees instead. They ran to a scene of several participants firing at a Primigenius Beast. Looking at the Yoju's hooves, Kafka remembered once cleaning up the Kaiju at a joint disposal with Iida Cleaners, realizing why each examinee was given a stun grenade. Kafka ran towards the Yoju and threw a stun grenade at it, briefly incapacitating it. Kafka explained to Ichikawa that the Kaiju have weak eyesight, but great hearing, thus are easier to kill once they are deafened. Kafka shouted at Izumo and the others to fire at the Yoju's stomach, since it happened to be weaker than most other Kaiju. After killing the Primigenius Beast, Izumo thanked Kafka, calling him a "Shinomiya groupie". Kafka yelled that he was not a groupie and ran off with Ichikawa.
As they ran, Kafka and Ichikawa celebrated having assisted the others. Kafka then felt he no longer needed to rely on his powers, when suddenly, a Primigenius Beast burst from nearby rubble and slammed its hand against him, causing him to bleed from his mouth. The Yoju shoved Kafka at a nearby wall with great force, causing him to crash into it. The Yoju approached Kafka as he realized that the officers would put the suit's shield up, rendering him failed. Kafka struggled to get up while still remembering that Mina was watching. The Yoju drew closer and opened its mouth, preparing to eat him. Before it could do so, the Primigenius Beast was shot to death by Kikoru. Kafka looked on in surprise seeing Kikoru and expressed gratitude, only for her to respond with mockery. Irritated, Kafka attempted to follow Kikoru to the Honju's direction, but struggled to do so due to his broken leg. As Hoshina informed Kafka that his suit's shield would be activated, Kakfa reminisced on having a zero percent Combat Power, imagining the others surpassing him. Despite Hoshina's warnings, Kafka, more determined than ever, stood back up, with his Unleashed Combat Power growing to 0.01 percent, declaring that he would no longer give up, no matter what.
Abilities
Charged punch
Kafka's primary form of attack is that of an electrically-charged punch. The punches are immensely powerful, being able to severely injure most Kaiju within a single blow. A single charged punch was enough to completely annihilate a Trichonephila and a Primigenius Honju.
Transformation
After his initial transformation in Yokohama South General Hospital, Kafka gained the ability to transform into his human or Kaiju form at will, though he initially struggled with subconsciously shifting into his Kaiju form.
Weaknesses
Like other Kaiju, Kafka can be killed via the destruction of his Core. In contrast to his extremely powerful Kaiju form, Kafka is drastically weaker as a human, initially possessing a zero percent Unleashed Combat Power.

Philinosoma (フィリノソマ Firinosoma) is a reptilian Kaiju that appears in episode 1 of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8, titled "The Man Who Became a Kaiju". It surfaced in Yokohama, where it was promptly killed by Mina Ashiro.
Name
Its name is not spoken in the series or the original manga, but it is given the name Philinosoma (フィリノソマ Firinosoma) on its character reference sheet.[5] Its name is derived from the similarly named lizard genus which contains horned lizards. A special Kaiju No. 8 broadcast on X alternatively spells it as Phrynosoma, the exact spelling of the aforementioned genus.[6]
Design
Philinosoma appears as a large reptilian creature. The upper half of its body is orange in color, with the Kaiju's underside being beige. It has several small pointed spines running down its head and back. The spines on the top of its head are cyan, capable of emitting a bioluminescent glow. It has several small and pointed teeth. Philinosoma has a row of large plate-like scales on both sides of its head, with a large dewlap hanging from its neck. The monster's eyes are yellow and bioluminescent. It possesses several crack-like markings on its face. Its legs are long with sharp black claws on each limb. Its tail is large and drags along the ground, with the creature's body standing upright.

"The Man Who Became a Kaiju"
Philinosoma surfaced in Yokohama, where it began to move towards Yamashita. A Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force helicopter fired its missiles at Philinosoma, but the monster's energy shield deflected them. It roared and smashed its hand into a nearby building. Several Defense Force officers arrived and fired their rifles at the monster, drawing blood. It swiped at one of the officers and attempted to bite them, but missed, crashing its head into a building. Suddenly, Mina Ashiro fired a blast of her T-25101985 cannon at the creature, destroying its Core. Its body then swelled up before bursting, with its remains flying into the air and raining down upon the city.
After Philinosoma was dispatched, the Monstersweeper, Inc. crew was sent to clean up the Kaiju's remains.
Abilities
Physical capabilities
Being listed as a 3.5 fortitude level Kaiju,[27] Philinosoma is strong enough to destroy a portion of a building with its hand and head. It appears to primarily use its jaws and hands for combat.
Energy shield
It appears to possess an energy shield, which was able to deflect several missiles from a Defense Force helicopter.
Bioluminescence
Philinosoma is shown to be bioluminescent, with the spines on its head glowing whenever it becomes stimulated.[27] Its eyes are also able to glow.
Weaknesses
Like all Kaiju in the series, Philinosoma can be killed by destroying its core. It was quickly dispatched after it was blasted by Mina Ashiro's T-25101985 Cannon, and its blood was drawn after being fired at by Defense Force officer's sniper rifles.

The Mysterious Larva (謎の幼獣 Nazo no yō-jū) is a small winged Kaiju that appeared in the first episode of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8, titled "The Man Who Became a Kaiju". After locating Kafka Hibino, it flew into his mouth and merged itself with him, transforming him into Kaiju No. 8.
Name
The creature's name is never spoken on-screen in the series or the original manga but it is listed as Mysterious Larva (謎の幼獣 Nazo no yō-jū) on its series character sheet.[7] The "larva" part of its name implies that the Kaiju is not fully grown. On the Japanese version of its character sheet, it is instead called Mysterious Young Beast.[27]
Design
The Mysterious Larva resembles a cross between a reptile and an insect. It has a long, gray, serpentine body with four pink, humanoid legs, as well as several overlapping scales on its underbelly. It has four beige, veiny wings that resemble those of a dragonfly. It has a visible exoskeleton running down its head and back. The creature has a long, thin head and four flap-like jaws with small sharp teeth on each one. Its eyes are large and bulging and capable of glowing red. The top of the creature's head has a cyan vein-like marking, similar to those of Kaiju No. 8.

"The Man Who Became a Kaiju"
After Kafka Hibino was convinced by Reno Ichikawa to join the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, he confidently declared his new desire. However, his enthusiasm was cut short as he noticed the Mysterious Larva hovering above him. The confused Kafka simply stared at the creature before it replied, "found you". Panicked, Kafka attempted to make its presence known, but the Kaiju flew into his mouth, merging with his body. As soon as Ichikawa pulled back the room's curtains, he saw Kafka, now transformed into a monstrous being that would later come to be known as Kaiju No. 8.
Abilities
Flight
The Mysterious Larva is capable of flying. Its flight speed was fast enough that it was able to enter Kafka Hibino's mouth before he could react.
Fusion
The Mysterious Larva was able to fuse itself with Kafka's body, transforming him into Kaiju No. 8. This process appears to be painful, as Kafka was seen violently writhing while his senses distorted.
Host detection
Through unknown means, the Mysterious Larva was able to locate Kafka Hibino.

Trichonephila (トリコネフィラ Torikonefira) are humanoid arachnid-like Yoju that first appear in episode 1 of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8, "The Man Who Became a Kaiju".
After Kafka Hibino and Reno Ichikawa reconciled their differences, a Trichonephila suddenly emerged from the ground and attacked Ichikawa. It then chased Kafka around the city of Yokohama, before being killed by Mina Ashiro. Later, another Trichonephila emerged and attacked a young girl and her mother. Before the Yoju could harm them, it was soon dispatched by Kaiju No. 8.
Name
The monsters' names are not mentioned in the original manga or in the series but are referred to as Trichonephila (トリコネフィラ Torikonefira) in a special Kaiju No. 8 broadcast, as well as their character sheets.[6][29][28] They are named after a genus of golden orb weaver spiders of the same name.
Design
Trichonephila's bodies resemble those of a spider. Their bodies are purple in color with a large segmented thorax. They have six long, purple, humanoid legs with yellow markings on each one. Their underbelly and leg joints are black and they have a dark gray mane of hair with yellow stripes wrapped around its neck. They have a row of plate-like scales running down its back. Trichonephila's heads are humanoid with several spines protruding from them. The monsters have several flat humanoid teeth, three of which are crooked. Their eyes are large and bulging, and they have two noses stacked on top of each other.

"The Man Who Became a Kaiju"
As Kafka Hibino and Reno Ichikawa were conversing at the end of their shift, a Trichonephila suddenly emerged from the ground. It attempted to bite Ichikawa, but he was tackled away by Kafka. It tried to grab Ichikawa, but Kafka kicked him away. The monster perched itself on the side of a building as Kafka told Ichikawa to flee, as well as to call the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. After Ichikawa fled, Kafka slammed a metal pipe against the ground, gaining the Trichonephila's attention. The monster roared and it began to chase Kafka, swiping at him with its legs. Kafka then ran into a nearby alleyway, preventing the Yoju from reaching him.
Soon after, the creature burst through a nearby building and continued its pursuit of Kafka. Kafka stopped and prepared to defend himself against the monster with the pipe. The Yoju proceeded to knock Kafka away, then stepped on his leg, breaking it. It opened its mouth as it prepared to eat Kafka when suddenly, Ichikawa arrived at the scene and smashed a stop sign against the monster's jaw, briefly incapacitating it. The Yoju swatted its leg at Ichikawa before attempting to grab him. Mina Ashiro's tiger, Bakko, charged forward and pounced on the Trichonephila's hand before the creature was shot several times by Ashiro. It roared and its Core was shot through, killing it.
"The Kaiju Who Defeats Other Kaiju"
After escaping the Yokohama South General Hospital, Kafka Hibino, now in his Kaiju form, sensed the emergence of another Trichonephila. Roaming the area, the Trichonephila approached a young girl and her mother who was trapped under their house's rubble. The creature opened its mouth as it prepared to consume the two.
Kafka suddenly rushed forward, punching the Yoju in the face and sending it flying a large distance away. Kafka then freed the girl's mother and told Ichikawa to get the two to safety as the Trichonephila returned. Kaiju No. 8 began to charge up an electrical punch, electricity energy jolting through his body. The Trichonephila lunged and attempted to bite him, but the Kaiju dodged out of the way. He then punched the Yoju's face, sending it flying into the air. The Kaiju exploded, its organs splattering across the area and causing a rain of blood.

Physical capabilities
A Trichonephila was strong enough to burst through an entire building during its pursuit on Kafka Hibino. They appear to use their legs as a primary form of defense and occasionally use their jaws as well.
Durability
A Trichonephila was able to withstand having a stop sign smashed against its jaw and crashing through an entire building.
Agility
The creatures proved to be very agile, with one being able to chase Kafka at great speed without any signs of exhaustion, as well as leap onto buildings.
Weaknesses
Trichonephila are susceptible to having their Core destroyed, thus killing them. One Trichonephila's hand was incapacitated by Bakko and it was injured by several of Mina Ashiro's shots before she destroyed its Core. A punch from Kaiju No. 8 was powerful enough to rupture another Trichonephila's entire body.

Primigenius (プリミジニウス Purimijiniusu) are cattle-like Kaiju that appear in episode 3 and 4 of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8, titled "Revenge Match" and "Fortitude 9.8" respectively.
They emerged in and attacked Hachioji, causing sixteen fatalities. However, they were then captured by the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force and relocated to the organization's Tachikawa Base to be used as training targets for the Secondary Selection exam. After Kikoru Shinomiya dispatched them all, they were briefly resurrected by Kaiju No. 9 before the Honju was eliminated by Kaiju No. 8. Mina Ashiro and Soshiro Hoshina later neutralized the remaining Yoju.
Name
Their names are not spoken in the original manga or in the series, but their visual sheets refer to the Honju as Primigenius (プリミジニウス Purimijiniusu) and the Yoju as Primigenius Beast (プリミジニウス 余獣 Purimijiniusu-yo-jū).[8] They appear to be named after the species name of the auroch, an extinct ancestor of modern cattle. The Yoju have an additional "beast" added to their names.
Design
The Primigenius Honju resembles cattle. Its body is humanoid and brown in color, with golden plates and several sharp spines running down its back. Its head features two brown, pointed, horns that gradually fade into a gold color, along with two stumps where its uniorgan would be as well as a lack of eyes. Its mouth has flat human-like teeth and a purple tongue, with a red marking around it. The Primigenius Honju has a long tail and hooved feet. Its arms are muscular and possess humanoid hands with each of its fingers possessing a single hoof.
The Primigenius Beasts resemble their progenitor but with some differences. Their bodies are white with a red marking on their faces. They have two rows of golden spines protruding from their back and their heads are elongated, ending in a point.
After being revived by Kaiju No. 9, both the Honju and Yoju retain their various bodily injuries from previously having been killed. Most notably, the Honju's intestines are visible. The monsters' coloration also changes, with the Honju's skin becoming purple with red horns and spines, and the Yoju's skin becoming green with blue markings around their mouths. The Honju later regrows its uniorgan which resembles a set of curved, spiked horns.

"Revenge Match"
After Soshiro Hoshina explained the next challenge for the Secondary Selection Exam, the Primigenius Honju charged at him, only to be stopped by a metallic barrier. The Honju roared as it attempted to reach Hoshina.
Before the test began, Hoshina explained that the Primigenius were the examinees' targets. He mentioned that the Kaiju caused sixteen fatalities the previous year in Hachioji. After the exam began, a Primigenius Beast noticed Kikoru Shinomiya approaching it, who proceeded to shoot it to death. Another of the Yoju attempted to attack two examinees but was killed by Kikoru.
Haruichi Izumo fired at a Primigenius Beast's back, but the monster was unfazed, turning to him and roaring. As Izumo, Aoi Kaguragi, and another participant continued to fire at the creature, Kafka Hibino and Reno Ichikawa arrived to assist the three examinees. The Yoju raised its hand, showing off its hooved fingers, causing Kafka to remember when he cleaned up the remains of this type of Kaiju. Kakfa ran at the Yoju and threw his stun grenade at it. The monster roared in pain and was left incapacitated. Kafka explained to Ichikawa that the monsters have weak eyesight, but good hearing, which is intercepted by the stun grenade's blasts. Kafka then shouted at Izumo and Kaguragi to aim at the monster's stomach. The creature roared at them and they shot at its stomach, rupturing its body and killing it.
As Kafka and Ichikawa ran through the area, another Primigenius Beast suddenly burst through the debris and slammed its hand against the former, launching him at a nearby wall. The Yoju approached Kafka and opened its jaws, ready to consume him. It roared before it was shot dead by Kikoru.
"Fortitude 9.8"
Several examinees fired at a Yoju, but it was killed by Kikoru Shinomiya. Kikoru continued her assault, killing two more of the Yoju. She then ran and grabbed a metal pole, which she used to decapitate a nearby Yoju. She planted the pole on the ground and used it to knock away the final Primigenius Beast, killing it. She finally reached the Primigenius Honju and threw a grenade at it, injuring it. The monster flailed about before Kikoru landed between its jaws and fired down its throat, rupturing its stomach. The deceased Honju then crashed down onto the ground, seemingly ending its reign. All of a sudden, a mysterious Kaiju appeared and fired a shot from its finger at Kikoru, briefly incapacitating her.
Suddenly, all the fallen Yoju's carcasses began to reanimate. The mysterious Kaiju began to pet the deceased Honju, slowly reviving it. After reviving the Honju, the Kaiju fired several more shots at Kikoru before leaving, weakening her. As the Defense Force began to pick up the Yojus' vitals once again, the Honju roared at Kikoru. Kikoru attempted to fire at it, but the creature swatted her away. It then regrew its severed uniorgan, allowing it to fire blasts of energy. The monster charged up a blast, then fired it at Kikoru, but it was blocked by Kafka Hibino, now shifting into his Kaiju form.
Several examinees fled to nearby shelters while Iharu Furuhashi and Haruichi Izumo fired at the Beasts. Reno Ichikawa reminisces on the moment he and Kafka first saw the Yoju reanimate, to which the latter left to go save Kikoru. As Kaiju No. 8 hysterically begged Kikoru not to tell the Defense Force of his secret, the Primigenius Honju charged up another blast and fired it. Kaiju No. 8 deflected the blast and began to charge up a punch. The Honju threw a punch at No. 8, which he blocked with his own charged punch. Proving much more powerful, No. 8's punch obliterated the Honju, its severed legs left standing and its organs falling down from the air. A rain of the monster's blood poured down onto the ground below. The monster's carcass began to regenerate, but failed, leaving it dead for good. Suddenly, a Yoju appeared behind Kikoru and tried to attack her, but it was quickly and gracefully killed by No. 8.
After all of the examinees were evacuated, Mina Ashiro and Soshiro Hoshina arrived on the scene of the Honju's demise. Hoshina noted the similarities between the Primigenius' remains and those of the Trichonephila's from three months prior, wondering if the two events are somehow linked. Ashiro then ordered that investigation and disposal units be brought in to examine the remains while she and Hoshina kill the remaining Yoju.

The Primigenius primarily use their hooved hands for combat. A single strike from them is enough to send humans flying. The Primigenius Honju is also able to fire a punch powerful enough to clash with those of Kaiju No. 8.
Energy blasts
The Primigenius Honju can fire electrical blasts of energy from horn-like protrusions known as a "uniorgan". Though they did not hit the Honju's intended target, these blasts were capable of causing a large explosion.
Weaknesses
Like all Kaiju, the Primigenius' cores can be destroyed. They lack eyes, rendering them blind. As such, they rely on their extremely sensitive hearing, making them weak to blasts from stun grenades, which injure them and leave them incapacitated for some time. The Yoju's stomachs are less durable than the rest of their body, and they were fatally injured by shots from Kikoru Shinomiya's rifle.

Kaiju No. 9 (怪獣９号 Kaijū Kyu-gō) is the main antagonist of the 2024 animated series Kaiju No. 8.
Kaiju No. 9 made his first appearance during the Secondary Selection Exam. He injured Kikoru Shinomiya and revived all the deceased Kaiju in the area before vanishing.
Design
Unlike most other Kaiju preceding him, Kaiju No. 9 has a humanoid appearance. His body is thin and skeletal in appearance and is a bone-white color. He has two sharp spines on each shoulder and several dark brown spots on his chest. He has reddish markings on his shoulder spikes, knees, elbows, fingers, and toes. His nails are long and white in color. His head resembles two flat mushroom heads stacked on top of each other. No. 9 can occasionally sprout eyes from his head at will, which he can conceal.

"Fortitude 9.8"
After all of the Kaiju during the exam were killed by Kikoru Shinomiya, Kaiju No. 9 suddenly appeared and fired a shot at her heart from his finger, incapacitating her for a brief moment. No. 9 began petting the deceased Primigenius Honju and slowly revived it as he did so. Kikoru asked who No. 9 was, to which he seemed surprised at her still being alive. He then noticed Kikoru's combat suit healing her wound and expressed curiosity about it. He finished healing the Honju and turned to Kikoru, growing a pair of eyes. He pointed his finger at her and commanded the Honju to "chew before [it] swallowed." No. 9 fired several shots at Kikoru, severely injuring her before leaving.
Hours later, Kaiju No. 9 sat in a bathroom stall and listened to a news broadcast on the incident he partook in, shocked that the number of fatalities was zero. He wondered if one of the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force captains was really that strong before the reporter mentioned Kaiju No. 8, interesting the creature. No. 9 then received a call on his phone, briefly startling him. He answered and Masahide Tokuda, assuming him to be Monster Sweeper employee Takamichi Hotaka, asked him where he was. No. 9 disguised his face to that of Hotaka's, assuring him that he would be back. No. 9 finished his transformation, noting that humans are so "particular about the time." Kaiju No. 9 walked out of the bathroom to meet with the others, with Toku lecturing him for having worried them. The Monster Sweeper crew then walked back to the site, mentioning the incident that took place during the exam. No. 9's neck briefly extended out of shape before he gained control of it and concealed his identity once more.
Abilities
Finger gun
Kaiju No. 9's primary form of attack is firing shots from his fingers. These shots are strong enough to penetrate and incapacitate targets. Before firing, his fingers grow bloated and disproportionate.
Transformation
Kaiju No. 9 can disguise himself as humans to blend in with them. He took the form of Monster Sweeper, Inc. employee Takamichi Hotaka.
Kaiju manipulation
Kaiju No. 9 is capable of reviving fallen kaiju, as demonstrated during his appearance in the exam. Additionally, the kaiju's power can be greatly enhanced after revival, shown when the revived Honju Primigenius' fortitude was greater than before.
